R70 – R95There is only one place to eat out this June and July when Durban’s top foodie talent will be cooking up a storm at the East Coast Radio House & Garden Show, taking place from the 28th June – 7th July at the Durban Exhibition Centre.
Those hungry to explore Durban’s favourite flavours can expect a mouth-watering line-up of events and experiences that will tickle your taste-buds and celebrate the eclectic mix of authentic flavours that Durban has to offer.
Be taken on a gourmet journey at the Discover Durban Cuisine Kitchen, proudly brought to you by Durban Tourism, supported by South African kitchen staple, Spekko Rice; where chefs of the highest calibre from around KZN will teach you tips and tricks during a series of live, interactive cooking and tasting demonstrations, hosted by Durban chef, Sherwyn Weaich.
Look out for Eat Out Magazine’s Rising Star of the Year 2017, Kayla-Anne Osborn, the executive chef at one of Durban’s most sophisticated eateries, The Chef’s Table; as well as Chefs Minnie and Tee and Pashi and Kim of My Kitchen Rules’ fame. Popular sister duo, Chilli Chocolate Chefs and Chef Johannes Richter from the Living Room restaurant at Summerhill Estate are also featured on the high-profile line-up, along with Chef Gordon Manuel from Endless Horizons Boutique Hotel.
Also showcasing their culinary skills in the demo kitchen are up-and-coming chefs sponsored by Durban Tourism, including Thobela Buthelezi, known as Chef Hats’ and Food by Chef Nonny. There’s also the culinary delights of Chef Zanele van Zyl and Chef Deena Naidoo, supported by Spekko Rice, to look forward to.
New this year is a Pop-up Kitchen; an edible experience where a different chef will be serving up a delicious dinner every evening over both weekends of the show. Expect to dine on five-star food prepared by Chef Deena Naidoo, supported by Spekko Rice, Chefs Pashi and Kim, Minnie and Tee as well as Chef Sherwyn Weaich. Seating for these exclusive pop-ups is limited and on a first-come-first-served basis.
Try something completely new with twins Lebo and Tebo Ndala of house-hold Durban brand, Laager Rooibos tea. Together with Master Tea Taster, Jonathan Kelsey, who’s tastebuds are insured for R5 million, there’ll be a wide selection of unique new flavours to taste.
As one of the East Coast Radio House & Garden Show’s longest running partners, the Hirsch family will spice up the demo kitchen with a bit of fun as they go head-to-head in a family cook-off to celebrate 40 years as the leaders in home technology and appliances. Expect a light-hearted, family-style approach to cooking with a dash of competitive spirit and a generous spoonful of humour thrown into the mix!
“We’ve managed to pull off something really special this year with our line-up of local chefs to be featured in both the Discover Durban Cuisine Kitchen and our Pop-up Kitchen,” says Show Director, Cairey Baxter-Bruce.
“Discover Durban Cuisine is a celebration of Durban’s cultural mix; where traditional and contemporary flavours meet, taking visitors on a journey of culinary delight. The show theme, ‘Make Yourself at Home’, encourages visitors to relax and feel as if they are enjoying a delicious meal in the comfort of their own home but prepared by one of KZN’s top cooking talents,” she adds.
“There is so much more to Durban than its glorious coast line and warm weather which is why we’re proud to once again support the Discover Durban Cuisine Kitchen at this year’s East Coast Radio House & Garden Show,” said CEO of Durban Tourism, Mr Thulani Nzama.
“This is your chance to experience a different side to Durban and feast on authentic flavours brought to you by top local chefs, restaurants, and foodies, all under one roof,” Nzama said.
Bigger and better than before, the Home Grown Design and Food Fair will offer hungry mouths a festival of food in a more relaxed and informal setting but with food that is equally delicious. Here you’ll find some of Durban’s most popular street food vendors, food trucks, artisanal products and local delicacies as well as decadent desserts, throughout the duration of the show.
Look out for Zazas Pops – a range of melt-in-the-mouth vegan popsicles as well as vegan falafals by Chef Rum of The Kitchen Guru. Meat-lovers won’t go hungry with The Smokin’ Barrel on-hand to serve up perfectly cooked dishes, smoked in a wine barrel or with the Wagyu beef burgers prepared by Midlands restaurant Menu at Highgate.
Indulge your sweet tooth at The Candy Factory where you will find a wide selection of pick ‘n mix sweets to put Willy Wonka to shame or try out something sinful at Plan B Dessertery or at Sweet Dream Ice Cream.
It’s not all just about the food! Take a break from the cooking and tasting and quench your thirst with new and unusual bubbly creations concocted by the Wooden Peach, a mobile drinks cart stationed at the Home Grown Design and Food Fair for the week, or sip on a fabulous gin-tail in the Garden Gin Bar, enjoy a local brew at one of the craft beer bars, savour a glass of wine or enjoy a cup of perfectly brewed coffee to give you that second wind!
“Durban is home to some of the best local eateries and street food vendors and produces some of the tastiest craft drinks around. Throughout the show, we want to bring these delicious treats directly to locals to give them a taste of what’s out there and where to find it. Whatever your flavour, you’ll find it in Durban,” says Baxter-Bruce.
Bring the whole family down and make yourselves at home, soak up the atmosphere and savour the authentic flavours of Durban at this year’s East Coast Radio House & Garden Show.
