Technical Skills Training
supported by Preformed Line Products (Pty) Ltd
Why this project?
The youth unemployment rate in South Africa exceeds 50%, leaving many young people excluded from the formal economy, with little hope of gaining access, especially those without a matric.
There is also undoubtedly a mismatch between what South African companies need and what the education system is producing, because it is estimated that the country faces a backlog of between 40 000 and 50 000 artisans. The lack of skills and adequate training, particularly in the building and construction industry, hinders development.
It is against this background that the PMCB, funded by PLP, partnered with the KZN Master Builders Association Training Academy to deliver basic courses in the following trades:
- Basic Bricklaying and Plastering;
- Basic Plumbing & Tiling;
- Comprehensive Carpentry and
- Basic Handyman & Carpentry.
The PMCB ran two training programmes, both funded by PLP:
June 2019: 40 young people with Grade 10 and/or 11 were trained (20 men and 20 women), 10 in each trade.
November 2019: 60 young people Grade 10 and/or 11 were trained (30 men and 30 women), 15 in each trade.
