Welcome to the Civil Society Organisations’ page for businesses that want to make a difference.
The organisations on this list offer some or all of these benefits:
This page is designed to help the business sector connect to the work of civil society organisations with whom your business can be proud to be associated, by offering a database of Non-Governmental (NGO) and Community Based (CBO) organisations in Pietermaritzburg and Umgungundlovu District.
This page is managed by a forum of concerned NGO and CBO leaders, who believe that different stakeholders in the district share the same concerns for a society where all can prosper, in a cleaner environment and where people and animals can thrive without fear. So we invite business to partner with us in our combined efforts to make a difference, based on our knowledge of development, healing, welfare and advocacy work.
The organisations listed here meet all or some of the basic criteria for credibility and accountability (listed below). All are required to update their entry and confirm their adherence to the basic criteria regularly to ensure this list remains up to date and credible.
This page will help you navigate the civil society sector effectively and find your perfect partner(s) to achieve your strategic goals.

Our VISION is a future in which all people in South Africa live in a participatory democracy with sustainable living environments and livelihood security. BESG works with vulnerable communities in combating poverty through accessing land, basic services, housing and self-help. We provide training, facilitation, and project management services largely in informal settlements and under-developed rural areas.
Opportunities to partner on CSI programmes:
1. “FEWS” is a low cost, high impact poverty alleviation programme that develops household resilience in Food, Energy and Water security. It follows the old proverb that if you give a man a fish he will eat tonight, but if you teach him to fish he will never go hungry. The majority of participants are women headed households and community caregivers.
2. The Distress Fund assists destitute households to repair and strengthen their housing through donations (in cash and building materials). It is targeted at individual households whose living conditions may pose a risk to life, and who cannot access state assistance through the housing subsidy scheme.

Ethembeni in Zulu means place of hope. We have realised that when Jesus followers come together to serve Him, hope is created. Hope is a future worth having. Therefore, our vision is to see, through Jesus, hope-filled families free from the brokenness of HIV and TB. The two vital shared behaviours required to bring about hope-filled and HIV free families: We honestly share our own story around HIV and TB within key family relationships in the Umngeni and Mpofana Municipalities which leads to crucial conversations. Resilience is demonstrated by participating in supportive relationships e.g. support groups and adherence clubs.
